Cervical cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Cervical cancer is often caused by several types of viruses called human papillomaviruses (HPV). HPV spreads through sexual contact, which is where the buzz begins.
Cervical cancer symptoms and risk factors
Screening for cervical cancer is important because abnormal cervical cell changes rarely cause symptoms. Symptoms may develop if these cell changes progress to cervical cancer. A risk factor is anything that increases your chance of getting a disease. High-risk sexual behavior greatly increases your risk.
